The Mando Group is dedicated to the effective treatment of both obesity and eating disorders, based on a fundamental discovery that both problems share a common cause and therefore can be treated similarly. In both cases, the individuals have lost the ability to regulate their food intake by sensing normal feelings of hunger and satiety. Most people in that situation simply gain weight, but a small minority eat as little and as rarely as possible in an effort to control their body weight. Both those who are obese and those who suffer from eating disorders can be taught to regain control over their food intake with feedback during and between meals. During meals, they use a Mandometer®, a device that gives our patients feedback on their eating pattern, while at the same time showing them the normal pattern of eating for that same meal. Between meals, obese patients learn to eat only when they are hungry with the SatietyMeter®, a device that asks the patients to rate their level of hunger at regular intervals, thereby training them to eliminate snacking. For both obesity and eating disorders, we see 75% of our patients normalizing their eating behavior and improving their body weight, allowing them to regain their health and live normal lives. These outcomes compare favorably to the 5-10% success that is seen for other attempts to address these serious medical issues.
